Here is a copy of our Math Bump It up Wall that all students have in their duotangs. We created this as a class and students are encouraged to use it.

Steps to Problem-Solving
1.Read the problem to understand it.
Tips: reread and look for important information (KWC chart), have you seen this problem or one like it before?

2. Choose a strategy
Tips: Look at our problem-solving anchor chart

3. Use your strategy and try to solve the problem.
Tips: Try another strategy if your strategy is not working.

4. Look back!
Does your answer make sense? Is your strategy efficient? Check your work and give yourself feedback using the bump it up wall.


Level 1 Getting Started
  1. I do not understand the concepts/task yet.

  1. I don’t use a strategy use to show my thinking or explain my steps. My work is confusing and hard to understand.
(Examples: number lines, base-ten materials, t-chart)

  1. I don’t have a concluding sentence. My explanation does not make sense YET.

  1. I do not use labels to explain my drawings, diagrams, steps, and numbers when I do calculations YET.

  1. I do not include any important units of measurement yet.(cm, m, minutes, hours, days, mm, ml, weeks)

NOT YET….but with hard work, determination and practice, I will get this!








Level 2 Moving Along

1. I understand some of the concepts/task. I made some mistakes.

2. I sometimes use a strategy to show my thinking or explain my steps. Sometimes my thinking is confusing.
(Examples: number lines, base-ten materials, t-chart)

3. I have some difficulty explaining my answer.

4. I sometimes use some labels to explain my drawings, calculations, diagrams, steps

5. I sometimes include any important units of measurement. (cm, m, minutes, hours, days, mm, ml, weeks)


Level 3 Almost There

1. I understood most of the concepts. I made minor mistakes.

2. I use a strategy that shows my thinking and explains my steps. My thinking and strategy is clear.
(Examples: number lines, base-ten materials, t-chart)

3. I have a concluding sentence that explains my answer.

4. I usually use labels to explain my drawings, calculations, diagrams, steps

5. I usually include any important units of measurement. (cm, m, minutes, hours, days, mm, ml, weeks)



Level 4 Roar!

1. I understood all of the concepts.

2.  I use a strategy that clearly shows my thinking and explains my steps. My strategy and thinking is very clear and efficient.
(Examples: number lines, base-ten materials, t-chart)

3. I always have a concluding sentence that explains my answer.

4. I always use labels to explain my drawings, calculations, diagrams, steps

5. I always include any important units of measurement. (cm, m, minutes, hours, days, mm, L, weeks)
